Alaska – Glacier hiking with Sneakers and my comfy pants

My Hamburg friend Anne recently texted to me: “Darling, to go to Alaska obviously was a good decision.“

I was just a one-week road trip but never before I send so many pictures to my family and friends. Well, it’s just freaking great up here.

For sure Alaska is not a destination for small budgets – but hey – how often I will get the chance to go there.

Cruising in Titanic style along the glacier edges, seeing huge pieces of ice falling into the sea, taking a flight seeing tour to Mount McKinley (the highest peak in North America), landing with a plane on top of a glacier or watching bears at stunning Denali national park – Alaska really amazed me!!!

I am totally getting the point why people drive along the state with camper vans for weeks – just watching the stunning mountain scenery, prairies and beautiful untouched nature.

Besides the typical American-style cities Anchorage and Fairbanks it’s pure nature paradise.

For this reason the license plate claims “Alaska – the last frontier.”

Along the road

In 1867 the now 49st state was sold by Russia to the United States of America and is more than three times the size of Germany.

Due to this huge spread with hardly any people outside the few big cities transportation by rail or bus is extraordinary time and budget consuming.

Getting a rental car is over here for sure the optimum – considering fueling up the whole tank for $40 it is actually quite a bargain 🙂 For about 1000 miles my little blue Toyota provides a nice cosy home for me.

I love it to be this flexible again.
At half way from Fairbanks to Anchorage a glacier appears at the left sight of the road – I have to get on for sure.

The other tourists (walking around with poles, spikes, hiking boots and sometimes helmets) are pretty confused watching me – after a tiring 5hour drive – walking pretty confident on the glacier with my comfy pants and Nike sneakers. Well, not really the appropriate gear for a glacier hike but for a spontaneous in-between sightseeing trip it worked quite well.

I love glaciers – these massive rivers of ice – and will keep all these beautiful memories of Alaska in my heart for sure!

After an intensive week in ice and snow I am heading to summer again – Hollywood is calling 🙂

PS: Here I got some more lovely Alaska pictures:
